For pets, aside from the hamster and the ox, I also like the cat.

Kalar and Lyndal are appealing because they can use those abilities more than once. The position swapping stone is the best defensive item, followed by the Queen's Order wand which is great for offense. Other characters who seem to be pretty OP are Shadow (Ambush Assassin), Kalar (Spatial Manipulation Mage), and Lyndal. I chose the other members based on their ability to set up such lines (Darby can be useful in the middle of the board precisely because he can't be targeted, allowing you to create choke points), or leverage the clumps of enemies that result (Sorine). I believe Rue has the best damage potential in the game, with Penetration Shot and her passive allowing her to do 4 damage to enemies in a line, twice, as long as she doesn't move (not counting dashes - meaning you can pull off chains of Attack -> Dash -> Attack).
